Provide names for removable storage media

When you plug in SD cards and
USB sticks, they are automatically
recognised and displayed as drives
in Windows Explorer. However, they
are generally named as removable
storage media or by the name of the
manufacturer. This makes finding and
remembering which drive contains what
more difficult.

As every USB device has a distinct ID,
the system recognises it and can again
identify the device later on. Provide
distinctive names to your SD cards, like
“Vacation2012” for example, so that you
fi nd long-term reference easier. To do
this, connect the USB storage device
to the computer and search for the
allocated drive in Explorer. After that,
right-click on the drive icon and select
the context command “Properties”. In
the “General” tab, enter the desired
name; keep in mind that it should have a
maximum of eleven characters. Confirm
your entry with “OK”. If you later wish to
blank out the name, simply delete the
characters from here.
